Era of Chichen Itza
Built by the Maya people from the Terminal Classic period, this is by far the largest pre – Columbian city. It is in Tinum Municipality of the Yucatan State, Mexico. Chichen Itza has also been the master piece from the Late Classic (that is from c. AD 600 – 900) through the Terminal Classic (c. AD 800 – 900) and in to the Post Classic period (c. AD 900 – 1200) in the Northern Maya Low Lands.
Outline – Design –
Chichen Itza has varied architectural styles similar to the plans that are seen in Central Mexico. These also include the Chenes as well as Puuc styls which the Northern Maya Low Lands are famous for. You may also find some non Maya styles but do not worry as these are the result of the cultural diffusion.
What Led To Such Contrasting Styles?
As per the Mesoamerican literature, Chichen Itza was one of the grand mythical cities or also known as the – Tollans. The major factor that led to such an assorted architectural style could be because of the diverse population.
Ownership & Maintenance –
Till 29th March 2010, the land which came under the monument was a private property but later came under the fold of the state of Yucatan. And now the ruins of Chichen Itza are maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology & History) as they have become a federal property.
